After a shipwreck, an intelligent robot named Roz is stranded on an uninhabited island
To survive the harsh environment, Roz bonds with the island’s animals and cares for an orphaned baby goose. Lupita Nyong’o is joined by writer-director Chris Sanders to talk about notable credits and their time making The Wild Robot together. According to writer Peter Brown, the inspiration for “The Wild Robot” came from a sketch he made of a robot in a tree. He then posed the question, “What would an intelligent robot do in the wild?” When the fox enters the lodge, a moose near the door growls, but the sound effect used is a recording of a bear.

Roz: [from the trailer] Sometimes, to survive, you have to become more than you were programmed to be. Paddler and Fink plant a tree together. A squirrel appears, laughing. Fink throws an acorn at the squirrel.

Following his adaptation of Jack London’s classic The Call of the Wild, Sanders adapted Peter Brown’s #1 best-selling novel The Wild Robot, a heart-pounding and moving sci-fi drama about a robot named Roz, who is stranded on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to her environment and take on the responsibility of adopting a young orphaned gosling named Brightbill. Sanders, who wrote and directed the film, made the film a masterpiece, and along with his longtime collaborating partner and executive producer Dean DeBois and producer Jeff Hermann, Sanders teamed up with Dreamworks Animation, the studio that made Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken, to create this groundbreaking animated masterpiece.

Featuring Academy Award winner Lupita Nyongo in the lead role of Roz, along with an all-star voice cast, groundbreaking animation and a heartwarming story that brings the literary phenomenon to life. The visual storytelling was influenced by films such as James Cameron’s Avatar, Brad Bird’s French The Iron Giant, Zemiecks’ Cast Away, and Kirk DeMicco and Faryn Pearl’s Ruby Gillman, while the emotionally driven acting was also influenced by films such as Nick Cassavetes’ My Sister’s Keeper, Tony Goldwyn’s The Last Kiss, Nigel Cole’s A Lot Like Love, and R. J. Sanders and the film’s story editor, Heidi Jo Gilbert, crafted a beautiful, heartwarming script and story that developed the emotional relationship between Roz and Brightbill, and set an even more serious tone than any animated film had ever had before.
Sanders had assembled a team of animators, artists and visual effects designers to create a groundbreaking and revolutionary style that was influenced by some of the recent innovations in feature animation with stylized 2D/3D hybrid looks to bring Roz and the world of The Wild Robot to life
The voice cast was incredibly well chosen, with Lupita as Roz, along with newcomer and British sensation Kit Connor as Brightbill, Pedro Pascal as Flick, voice acting legend Mark Hamill as Thorn the Bear, Catherine O’Hara as Pinktail, British sensation Matt Berry as Paddler, Bill Nighy as Longneck, Stephanie Hsu as Vontra and Ving Rhames as Thunderbird The Falcon (a brand new character created for the film), giving their best performances that could make this film a potential frontrunner for the Best Animated Feature Oscar.
